THEME LAUNCH PARTY

Live hip hop, a giant lie detector, two-for-one cocktails, a former member of The Clash, an elusive billionaire, burlesque dancers and an artist who sees colours then paints them when he listens to music. These are just some of the delights we’ve put together for a party to launch the ‘Murder on the Standon Express’ theme in The Cobden Club on the 28th May.

Headlining the party are the Rotten Hill Gang who feature the former lead guitarist of The Clash, Mick Jones, and give hip hop a decidedly Dickensian twist with dark tales of London life. In support and coming straight out of Surrey, brandishing his trusty banjo, is the poshest man in rap, Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer. There’s also a welcome, raw slice of sleaze in the form of punk-pop scuzz-meisters, Pink Cigar and some guitar virtuosity courtesy of teenage flamenco troubadours Fran and Josh.

On DJ duties are Billy Idle, Mental Blank and The Dig. There’ll be suitably themed burlesque performances from The Bee’s Knees and the Voodoo Bitch Doctor, alongside visual art from Kilford the Music Painter and VJ West, and interactive theatre from Heritage Arts. And liars beware. We’ll be offering a sneak preview of artist William Hunt’s polygraph installation, which is set to be a feature at the festival the summer.

Billionaire philanthropist Lord Richard Bingham will also be in attendance, holding a press conference to officially launch The Bingham Trust at The Cobden Club before the party starts.

With The Great Brain Robbery taking charge of proceedings it should provide a taster of the crime-themed late-night mix of live music, cabaret and performance they have planned for Standon Calling this summer.

Anything else? The criminal dress code gives you the chance to try out a themed outfit ahead of the festival, while we have a two-for-one promotion on cocktails and beers are £3 all night long. Look forward to seeing you there.
