“I like writing about canals and sewage fans and bunkers” - The latest Mancunian to infiltrate the music scene is pop rocker, Lonelady.
The album Nerve Up caused a bit of a stir up north in 2010 with a post punk sound consisting of jarring guitars and sticcato vocals. Things get a little funkier with the latest album from Lonelady, Hinterland. This was the sole creation of the singer and guitarist Julie Campbell, now known under her guise of Lonelady. From the outskirts of the city of Manchester, Julie Campbell has been working away in the studio, demonstraing a catchy sound, combining simplistic and distinct layers of funky guitar plucking, dance inducing drums and an air of late 70's pop rock. Her music has been critically anchored as sharp and angular and has a distinct mancunian stamp on it. Julie has described the northern city as the inspiration for her snappy pop tunes, also taking referencing the likes of Prince and Parliament.

Whilst writing and recording in the dusty mills of Manchester, she described a time when she was rehearsing, and rats would enter and leave the room at certain points of her set, as if they were helping her write out the set list. It's these little magical stories that makes her music so enchanting...
“Hinterland is also the landscape of your mind, your inner landscape. When I was writing this album, I was going through very long periods of being very withdrawn actually to a very extreme degree. And it’s very interesting what happens during those periods to be honest when you retreat inside a landscape of your own imaginings. There are at least two songs on the album that deal directly with withdrawing into this interior landscape.” - Julie Campbell
