Children’s Authors Alice Hemming & Tamsyn Murray join us for Live Readings
As part of the biggest and best family area we’ve ever had, we are very happy to welcome two fantastic children’s authors – Alice Hemming and Tamsyn Murray – to perform readings of their brilliant works. We recently got the chance to ask these dream-weavers some questions:
Alice Hemming, author of ‘The Black and White Club’ (and many others), waxes lyrical on why she loves writing children’s stories and her future plans –
Writing for children is so much fun! Creating a story is a bit like playing a game of make-believe where you invent a character and pretend to be them. I love meeting my readers at events like Standon Calling.
If you had to choose one character from your books to be real – and have as a
friend! – who would it be?
I’m going to have to say Bibble, an alien who makes things out of bubbles. I would like to have a ride in his bubble spaceship and visit Planet Bibble, maybe he could even make me some big bubble earrings to wear?
What are you working on at the moment / next?
It’s busy, busy at the moment. I am finalising the text for a funny picture book, which will be out at the end of 2017. The stories are short but there are a lot of them!
Are you looking forward to Standon Calling festival and our wonderful family audience?
I am super-excited about sharing my stories at Standon Calling. What a fantastic way to start the summer holidays! I live just down the road in Hertford so I am sure to bump into familiar faces as well as meeting lots of new people.
Tamsyn Murray, author of the ‘Stunt Bunny’ series and many other wonderful works, tells us about how she got into writing, and how she approaches writing for children of all ages.
I dabbled in writing my own stories from an early age but in 2008, I was given a book called ‘Wannabe a Writer?’ and it inspired me to take writing seriously. So I knuckled down and wrote my first book that year, I signed my first publishing deal in 2009 and haven’t stopped writing since. I’ve lost count of how many books I’ve had published since – things are a tiny bit crazy at the moment!
What do you love about your job?
Being able to create a whole new world out of nothing, and getting to make things up all day. But the best part of being a children’s writer is meeting my readers – they are always so enthusiastic and brilliant and a lot of fun!
You write for both younger and older kids. How different is your approach to each?
I’m careful to keep my audience firmly in mind no matter who I’m writing for. The length of the story, vocabulary used and complexity of the plot varies according to the age of my reader so I always think of them as I write and make sure each word is the right one for that particular readership. And I try to make it fun – there will some lightness even in my serious stories.
What are you working on at the moment / next?
I am editing my first Young Adult book for five years - ‘Instructions for a Second-hand Heart’ is being published this autumn and a bit of a change of style for me – it took me four years to write, that’s how difficult it was. It’s about a boy who needs a heart transplant, the sister of the boy who saves his life, and what happens when they meet.
Are you looking forward to Standon Calling festival and our wonderful family audience?
ABSOLUTELY! I genuinely cannot wait – I’ve heard such good things about Standon Calling and how fabulously family-friendly it is. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone and I’m bringing my own family too.
Make sure you catch Alice and Tamsyn at Standon Calling 2016!
