Standon Calling Dog Show 2012

As far as we know we’re the only UK festival to feature our own Dog Show. In fact as far as know, Standon Calling might be the only UK festival to allow dogs on site. The annual dog show is becoming a firm favourite with festival-goers, although it’s probably one of the more chaotic spectacles at the event. For instance there is some confusion as to who was the overall winner last year.

Deanne Palmer believes her caramel spaniel, Hudson, took the ‘Best in Show’ gong, but there’s also a claim from Phoebe Kitscha for her ginger greyhound, Mac, though she admits to a certain degree of confusion.

“I had no idea what was going on to be honest,” says Phoebe. “All I remember is the angry little dog got ‘worst behaved’ and that dog with massive bollocks started humping things.”

We’re not sure whether the well-endowed mutt won the ‘Most Like Its Owner’ award, but we do know the identity of the “angry little dog”, who won the ‘Most Unruly’ award.

“He’s not angry just misunderstood,” says Candy Wall of Ed, before pointing out further controversy. “He won first prize for ‘Most Unruly Dog’ and second prize for ‘Biggest Cheer’, which was a massive con as he clearly had the biggest crowd, and his own chant, and he made it on to the Guardian website. I would say that was best in show.”

With entrant satisfaction in mind we’ve decided to take the Dog Show a lot more seriously this year, with some interesting prizes. We’re expanding it to feature more categories and there’s no limit on the number of dogs that can enter, so feel free to bring yours along and spread the word to any pooch-owning pals.
